Girls in Tight Dresses… and Heavy Eyeliner: My Fav Looks From The L Word!

Written by Sharon Hamza

Those girls get messyyyyyy, but the fits stay clean asf!

Recently, my friend and I started watching The L Word, a  TV show centred on a group of lesbian friends living in Los Angeles, and all of their escapades. The show is so violently 2000s, both narratively and aesthetically, and I couldn’t help but gag (positive) at the outfits.

What makes The L Word so gripping, aside from its insane but enjoyable plot lines, is the strong identity that the characters portray through their clothes. I’m a firm believer that a good character design should scream their name before they even speak - and that’s just what this show’s cast did.

Let’s dive into their iconic looks, shall we?

#1: Shane McCutcheon in Glasses and a Popped-Collar

I’m starting off with Shane because she’s my favourite character hehe!

This gag…I was initially taken aback when she cut her hair like this, but one thing you can never take from Shane is that intense gaze, like waiittttttuhhhh! This fit definitely helped me warm up to the new hair.

#2: Helena Peabody in a Cut-Throat Blazer and Pencil Skirt

THIS is how you introduce a character bitchhhh oh my goodness. The white criss-cross top under the cropped blazer was already so fab, and then she stood up. That pencil skirt secured with what looks like safety pins?? At the office?? Insane.

#3: Bette Porter in Pearls and Sickening Suspenders

One thing about Bette is that she’s gonna put an outfit ON, but this one was something different. It was a regular ass Tuesday, and she decided to put her foot on everyone’s neck, unprovoked. The pearls and the suspenders added the right amount of business and“ I want to attract women”-ness, and I live for that.

#4: Jenny Schecter in Her Self-Defining Pixie

I know this is about outfits but, I had to mention how significant Jenny’s pixie was for her character and subsequent fashion choices. Simply put, Jenny cutting her hair was her way of reckoning with her past traumas and queer identity. Her character gained so much more than the hair she lost and I really loved this look on her.

#5: Tina Kennard Serving Mermaid Mother

I couldn’t get a clear picture of this outfit on Tina, but I think the delicate elegance speaks volumes. I absolutely adored this top on Tina: so sparkly and pretty and her hair just adds to the airy atmosphere of the overall outfit. Like duh, of course she named her baby Angellica, she’s an angel!

#6: Kit Porter With a Double Tank Top Moment

A double tank with a skinny knitted scarf? No notes. Classic, simple, and gorgeous. All I’ll say is bring back Kit’s curls!!!! Maybe they’ll be back in season four? Sigh…

#7: Shane in Leather

Woah. Shane does NOT let up omg.

I would have added a whole bunch of Shane in this article but then it would go on forever (LOL).

I might be 20+ year late to the party, but The L Word is such a visual delight and the story is equally as riveting. I’m loving this show so far and if you want to see more #SwaggyAssLesbians on TV, I totally recommend it!
