Sexy-Evil Music is Where It’s At

There is more to sex music than meets the ear.
The most generic sex playlist you could find on Spotify most likely includes artists of the likes of The Weeknd, Daniel Caesar, Rhianna, etc. When I say generic, I don’t mean bad. Rather, these playlists are starter packs, a peek into what an incredibly intimate playlist could actually sound like. They all seem to hold a similar sound and composition, a sultry, deeper melody, accompanied by lustful lyrics. Think:“ Earned It” and “ Get You.” Some people, most likely those of the straight, cis, white variety, may believe these good yet copy-pasted sounding songs are the end all be all of bedroom music. Allow me, femme lesbian retired whore, to tell you where the real freak is at.

One of my favorite songs of all time,“ Play Dead” by Björk, has been trending on TikTok amongst weird gay people like me. It’s irresistible with its pounding bass line and sweeping, dramatic strings.“ Berghain” is a similar song, which also has an orchestral motif. These songs command the listener’s attention via their complex compositions. It isn’t difficult to listen to these songs, but I wouldn’t consider them easy listening. They’re weird, yet addicting.
This is what makes them sexy-evil. Instead of a plain, slow, moody, and sexy sound, the artists deliberately throw smooth listening to the wind. Sexy-evil songs are strange in nature. A listener is supposed to sit with suspense and discordance. They are being topped, to put it crudely, by the song, taken on a mysterious journey. Sexy-evil songs are about submission.

This particular sound of music can be traced back to 80s club culture.“ Blue Monday” by New Order is a classic synth hit that has done numbers in clubs, bars, dungeons, you name it.“ Blue Monday” is a siren of a song, calling all those who hear it to the dance floor or towards the lap of the nearest sexy person. The body surrenders at the first measure of the driving beat.“ West End Girls” by the Pet Shop Boys and“ Fire In My Heart” by Escape from New York are not too dissimilar, both of which trend consistently on social media and stand as shining examples of the unmistakable sound of 80s New Wave.
Eroticism is the root of sexy-evil as a sound. Imagination is prioritized over action, and that imagination refuses to be spelled-out. Mystique is crucial to sexy-evil and eroticism. Maybe instead of listening to George Michael, give this playlist a try. Songs like“ Careless Whisper” or“ Freak” by Doja Cat don’t leave anything up to the listener to decide. No, no...let your mind run wild!
